JORDAN RUTTER-COVATTO
about me.
I’ve been working for over a decade as an arts professional, appearing onstage in operas, concerts, musicals, and plays and behind-the-scenes as a producer, copyist, arranger, composer, and voice teacher. I believe in a holistic approach to the arts built on a strong technical foundation, meticulous preparation, and a collaborative spirit that creates the conditions for a fully realized performance. My process is developed from a combination of bel canto singing technique, method acting, and baroque gesture, and I've applied it across multiple genres and mediums over the years.
My musical interests are in the Italian Baroque style, the bel canto tradition, contemporary opera, and cabaret songs. You can see my exploration of these and more through my work with my company counter codex, which I run with my husband in NYC.
Opera highlights include the lead in Stefan Weisman and David Coté’s The Scarlet Ibis at Chicago Opera Theater, Miles in The Turn of the Screw with On Site Opera, and the world premiere of Robert Paterson and David Coté’s Three Way in co-production with Nashville Opera and American Opera Projects at BAM. I've also premiered Daniel Asia’s Tin Angel with Teatro Grattacielo and Niloufar Nourbaksh’s Threshold of Brightness with Beth Morrison Projects, and done a myriad of workshops with companies including The American Opera Project, Beth Morrison Projects, American Lyric Theater, American Modern Opera Company, and independent producers.
In NYC’s theater scene you might have seen me in the premiere of Johnny Lloyd’s play birthday birthday birthday at Columbia’s New Plays Festival, or in my Lincoln Center Debut as the Ibis in Truth Future Bachman’s musical Skyward: An Endling Elegy. My off-Broadway debut was performing incidental music for Origin Theater Company’s play POISON by Lot Vekemans.
As a composer I’m primarily interested in vocal music, and collaborate with other artists and producers to bring their projects to life. Recent projects include a new orchestration of Offenbach’s Orphée aux Enfers for chamber orchestra, arrangements for John Kelly’s cabaret Weill Boy, Brecht Girl, Eisler Mann, and the cabaret song “The Banned-Book Tango” with Fred Sauter, which won third prize at the 2025 New York SongSlam competition.
I got my Bachelor’s Degree from the University of North Florida and my Master’s Degree from Manhattan School of Music. These days I live in NYC and you can find me at the library or the leather bar.
